The Media Constructs Reality

The media constructs reality in a variety of ways. They give you a perspective on reality or a modified version of it but never the actual thing. In the picture that I have chosen above shows exactly that. As you can see, the original photo that has the black man at the top has nothing wrong with it in my opinion and is a good photo. Then the photo below it is photoshopped to remove the man and they still fully fail to do so because you can still see part of his right leg. I feel that this is absolutely ridiculous. The fact that they would photoshop out the black man is repulsive. I feel that this sends a very negative message and is very racist and discriminatory towards black people. I feel that magazines and newspapers shouldn't do things like this because there is no purpose in doing it and it is extremely rude and uncalled for.

  1. There's really no clear idea as to why this man was photoshopped out of the photo, except perhaps, that this photo shows Prince William on some sort of training expedition and British audiences might think that having a black man in the photo makes it look like William is in some sort of "unsafe" situation. It clearly reflects the racist attitude of the magazine that originally published the photo, and assumes audiences are also unconsciously racist. The only thing that seems to be good about this obvious construction was that it was done so poorly that it wasn't hard to spot and therefore was exposed by other media sources.
