The Oscars

On Sunday, February 27th were the 83rd annual Academy Awards. It was a good night overall with some exciting, heart-warming and shocking moments. One of the most notable being Mellisa Leo's f-bomb. "The King's Speech" ended up winning best picture which was expected by most people. Although I'm not thrilled that "The King's Speech" won so many awards, I am very happy that "Inception" and "The Fighter" won some awards as well. I greatly enjoyed those movies for a number of reasons. In "Inception", the cast was absolutely phenomenal and the way everything from the music to the editing flowed was tremendous. "The Fighter" I greatly enjoyed because for one, I am a huge fan of Mark Wahlberg. I loved the simplicity and sense of realism that the movie had because it was a true story and you could relate to it. I also felt that the cast was extremely good in their roles and just everything in the movie I really enjoyed. The most notable being Mellisa Leo winning best supporting actress and Christian Bale winning best supporting actor who were both very deserving of those awards. I think the one complaint that a lot of people including myself will have about The Oscars is their hosts. I found that throughout the night, James Franco and Anne Hathaway were quite awkward and seemed nervous on stage and it made for some dull and awkward moments. I feel that their goal of reaching to a younger demographic in a sense was achieved because I know that a lot more people my age watched it this time, but I don't think a lot of them enjoyed it because of the mediocre performances by the hosts.  Also, a few of the award speeches I did not like, especially one of the women who literally had a piece of paper with a speech written on it. That was just unclassy and rude to the other nominees. I feel that The Oscars definitely show style, money, change and fun when it comes to the laws of popular culture. Everything the stars wear is by a famous designer and it is all very fancy and "hollywood". Also it shows that the world of film is constantly changing money-wise and genre-wise. And of course that movies can be fun to watch, star in and just be a part of. Overall, I feel that the night ran smoothly for the most part apart from a few awkward moments along the way. It was a fun and enjoyable night and congratulations to all of the winners and nominees.

  1. It sounds like you enjoyed Inception and The Fighter- what elements of those films appealed to you? Do you think this show was successful in reaching out to a younger demographic? How do the laws of popular culture apply to this show? What key concepts of media studies could be applied here? These are all ideas that could be expanded upon.
